Americana Series Part I: July 4th Gringo Hangout The American Legion

The Place: July 4th Gringo Hangout The American Legion!

The Experience: There is no better way to celebrate U.S. Independence Day then with an article on the American Legion a place where Gringos like Gringo G welcome everyone with open arms. The setting is unique, an Art Deco style house transformed into a safe haven for American classics ... it is like traveling back to another time and entering an old house in Los Angeles or Miami in the 40s, but with big screens to watch the Super Bowl every year!

The Legion offers possibly the widest and most authentic variety of Americana cuisine in the DF. The offering ranges from Texas Chili to classic burgers to Southern Fried Chicken.

Gringo G is absolutely enamored with Saúl's Rockin' Chili Bowl ... a generous portion of authentic Texas Chili with a dollop of creme on top with a side of fresh onions, tomato and chile to add on top. The chef Saúl was taught the recipe by a Texan member of the Legion  ... who had to search and search eventually finding the right chile powder to use in the small shops of Mexico City´s Chinatown.

The burgers on offering are obviously excellent, as they should be in a Gringo hangout, and will satisfy even the most avid burger aficionado.

In the end if you are in or around the Condesa or Roma Norte and you feel that gnawing desire for a piece of Americana ... head to The Legion and you will definitely quench your urges!

The Location: Celaya 25, between Plaza Popocatépetl and Av. Amsterdam, Colonia Hipódromo Condesa, DF.

The Specials: There is a wide offering of Americana on the Legion's menu but Saul´s Rockin´Chili Bowl is by far the most unique and hard to find dish on offer ... plus it is a pleasure to slurp up!

Tips: Feel comfortable heading to the Legion regardless of your nationality or creed. The Legion is an accepting place with many members that have Mexican families in the DF. Be ready to enjoy the great food.

Also, the Legion is open from noon until 5pm on Sundays for an American Brunch (waffles, sausage, bacon, etc.) ... which is becoming quite popular!
